I Knew My Day Was Coming …

Date January 29, 2008

This has been going around the horse blogs for last day or so, so I knew it was only a matter of time before I became the next victim, er playmate….

I’ve been tagged by Grey Horse Matters (grey horses are my favorites by the way)  to share seven weird or little known facts about me. The rules of the game are this–Once you are tagged, link back to the person who tagged you. Post the rules on your blog. Post 7 random or weird facts about yourself on your blog. Tag 7 people and link to them. Comment on their blog to let them know they have been tagged.

Since this is a horse blog, I’m going to keep it horsey. So without further ado …

  1. I’ve been riding horses since before I was born. My mom rode in a horse show when she was three months pregnant with me. After I was finally born, she had me on a horse before I could even walk.
  2. My best friend and I would ride our horses bareback in the winter as we were growing, and were quite the actresses. While we actually rode hunters and equitation, we would pretend to be wild Indians, stuffy old ladies riding sidesaddle, western pleasure riders, jockeys, saddleseat riders, and any other style of riding we could think of. Of course, we asked the horses to behave like the mounts of all these different characters. We also had competitions to see who could make their horse walk the slowest down the length of the ring.
  3. I’ve always been a goody-two-shoes and hardly ever broke rules, but we used to jump by ourselves in the indoor arena where no one could see us even though we knew we weren’t supposed to. I took a few spills doing that I could never tell anyone about. Fortunately, I was never hurt. This is the first time I’ve admitted this, so if my mom is reading, the cat’s out of the bag. I don’t think she’ll mind too much, she and her best friend did worse when they were kids on horses. :-)
  4. I, like almost everybody else who has been tagged so far, would much rather clean a barn than my house.
  5. This is a little disgusting, but since I’m tattling on myself … I don’t usually bother to wash my hands before eating something when I’m at the barn. Even if I spent all morning cleaning stalls. This goes against all hygienic rules we’ve always been taught, but I have a pretty healthy immune system as an adult and I’m inclined to think that little bit (ok, lots) of dirt was actually good for me.
  6. I actually enjoy throwing around hay, and refuse to wear long sleeves to protect my arms. We had several large hay fields at my home barn, and I helped bring in and put up all three cuts for several years. One year we were out from 2:00 in the afternoon until after midnight working to get it all in because it was supposed to rain the next day. Having my arms all scratched up amuses me; it’s like showing off a war wound. My husband thinks it’s gross, though. I’m lucky I’m not scarred for life.
  7. Secretariat is my favorite racehorse of all time. It helps that we have the same birthday. We are both March 30 babies, although he beat me by about 13 years.

Now that I’m getting caught at the end of the game, I’m going to have trouble tagging people who haven’t already been bitten by this nasty bug. Here’s goes…

    Tag accepted and posted!

I’m with you on not washing hands at the barn. I think horses are clean and I also think that’s added to my immunity. However, I always wash after handling dogs, cats, people, etc.
