Another Good Ride For the Obstinate Therapeutic Riding Student

11 March 2008 3 Comments

T is quickly becoming one of my favorite — albeit challenging — students at the Pegasus therapeutic horseback riding farm where I volunteer every Monday night. I’ve chronicled her progress for a while.

For those of you who’ve been following T, Micah, and me, she only threw her reins once last night. Once! She talked to me a little more and answered more of my questions, too. Last week we did some trotting, and I had a hard time getting her to sit up straight. This week, I reminded her and she did it! She looked awesome.

Randy (our instructor) didn’t seem overly impressed; he said T goes in cycles. She’s been in a misbehaving cycle for such a long time, that hopefully this good one lasts a while too.

Well if the instructor is right and T goes in cycles, maybe you were just the one to bring the good out, or maybe she just likes you and wants to work with you because you are her favorite.

Everyone goes in cycles whether we realize it or not is another matter. Learning to understand them and bring out the good part of a cycle can be really helpful. Don’t let him discourage you.

Thanks for the encouragement guys! Randy is a pretty optimistic guy, so I’m not too concerned about his lack of excitement. I’ve got enough for the both of us anyway. :-) And that’s true … we all go through cycles.
