If You Want To Jump Well, Don’t Use Stirrups
March 26, 2008
When you are jumping a horse, your leg is your foundation. If you don’t have a strong solid leg in the right position, you are going to be in trouble. And if you have good form and have built up good length strength, you should be able to do this:
I’ll admit, this rider is pretty phenomenal. Actually, I’m more impressed that she kept her cool than that she completed a jumper round with no stirrups and some nasty bucks. Not many people could keep going unphased after riding out those bucks and losing their stirrups.
Who cares about ribbons; anyone who is jumping should aspire to this!
I’m just really hoping that she was finished with the course and that she didn’t get disqualified for falling off outside the ring. She definitely deserves a ribbon for that performance!

Wow that is amazing. I wonder if those irons flopping around bruised up her legs. She really did keep her compusure.
I wondered if she fell off outside the ring or at what point the “out gate” was considered to be. If she was off outside of that, she should have been good.

Awesome video; I’m surprised the dangling stirrups didn’t make the horse go nuts, although she did seem to have her hands full for the rest of her round. VERY impressive!
I also went back thru your older posts and thank you SO much for posting the Secretariat Youtube’s! I again had chills- I watched all 3 races live on TV when i was 11. He has been my alltime favorite horse since, with Ruffian a close second(her last race was another I watched in real time). My daughter gave me a book for Xmas: “The Horse That God Built”. I can’t remember the author, but it’s about Secretariat and his groom. It’s so well written, I only read a few pages at a time, just to savor and relive the whole period of time.
I like your blog very much- great writing!

This reminds me of some of the horse shows I watched my daughter Jacquie compete in, her jumper was a bucker with many other athletic tricks. I am happy to say she never got hurt. When she was a child around 8 ,she used to get beginner jumping lessons over small jumps but the kids arms were spread wide and they had no stirrups either. I’m sure that helped later on in her riding career. I give the girl in the video alot of credit, I know just how she feels, just finishing in one piece is always a plus.
