Kentucky Derby Winner Struggles With Second Career

29 April 2008 8 Comments

This hilarious article was featured in the New York Times Online yesterday: A Pampered Champion’s Finicky Taste. And I just had to share.

2002 Kentucky Derby winner War Emblem is apparently facing a little performance anxiety – or he’s just unusually picky – now that he’s started his second career as a stud. According the NY Times article, War Emblem has only managed to mate with  70 mares in five years time, which isn’t even half what most stallions do in just one year.

The unfortunate part is that he is actually spawning successful kids, which isn’t a guarantee no matter how good the parent was.

It’s been three years since War Emblem produced a live foal, and two years since he did his business with a mare. His managers feel that he may be lacking in confidence after time spent with other stallions at the breeding farm in Japan where he lives. So, he’s been isolated from the big guys, surrounded by mares, and receiving testosterone treatments in the hopes that his natural sex drive will kick into gear.

Those foals of his are becoming a hot commodity since they are so hard to come by. The joys of capitalism … with lots of demand and little supply the War Emblem foals are going to be pricey.

I know this is probably big news in the racing world, but I just found it amusing that it made it as a top headline in one of the country’s major news media sources. At the same time, it could be more junk about celebrity lives and break ups and babies or horrifying things people do to one another. So, I’ll take some light hearted news added into the mix.

And who knew there was such a thing as a Specialist in Equine Sexuality? Sheesh.

I have to feel bad for the poor horse, seeing as his aversion to breeding is being splashed explicitly across the internet. I can’t imagine that’s going to help his confidence any.

It makes sense that horses can be sexually dysfunctional just like humans… or maybe War Emblem just has a strong sense of supply and demand.

Maybe he is looking for a permanent mate and doesn’t want to play the field and be called a mimbo(ala Sienfeld). Or he may just be very selective.
