2008 Olympics Equestrian TV Coverage on NBC
July 16, 2008
NBC paid a massive amount of money to get sole rights for covering the Olympics, and has recently posted the stations and schedules on their Olympic website. Go to the NBC Olympics TV and Listings section of their website, input your zip code and cable/satellite provider, and get a specific Olympic TV schedule for your area. You can browse by sport so that you don’t have to read every listing to dig up the equestrian events.
Olympic Television Coverage on NBC
NBC recently issued a news release outlining the television networks, events, and total amount of hours they will be covering.
NBC will air 3,600 hours of Olympic coverage on several of their affiliates including NBC, MSNBC, USA, Oxygen, CNBC, Telemundo, and Universal.
Some of the 20 total hours dedicated to the Olympics on Oxygen will include equestrian event coverage. According to the press release, Oxygen Olympic coverage will run 6:00-8:00 pm Monday through Friday.
In addition to the 3,600 TV hours, NBC will also spend 2,000 hours streaming live video online of 25 different sports … including equestrian!

Thanks for an equine site! I have had a hard time finding any information about Olympic Equestrian events. Very, very little coverage. I appreciate your dedication.
July 14th, 2008 at 10:31 am
Joe,
Glad to hear you like the site! That was the exact problem I found, and why I decided to dedicate my blog to Olympic equestrian coverage over the next few months. It is hard to find good information out there. I’ll keep updating this several times a week with new rider profiles and other Olympic news.
July 14th, 2008 at 3:36 pm

This is awesome, the only thing I wanted to know about this Olympics is when I can see all of the equestrian competitions!
July 18th, 2008 at 9:24 pm
Thanks for the effort! Heidi White is my niece and we want to follow her as much as possible.
July 26th, 2008 at 1:40 pm
Thanks, Deena, for the list of equestrian coverage!

Detailed Olympic schedule is on Beijing’s web site: http://en.beijing2008.cn/schedule/
Just click on any sport and a to-the-minute, detailed schedule downloads (.xls “excel” format).
July 28th, 2008 at 4:54 am
FYI, Beijing’s site is event times, not TV times. Another great event times schedule: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/olympics/2008-04-21-beijing-schedule_N.htm
For TV, NBC is saying they will publish detailed schedules as they get them from Beijing: http://www.nbcolympics.com/resultsandschedules/index.html
FOX TV has a detailed equestrian schedule (can search by event): http://msn.foxsports.com/olympics/schedule

OK, having a blonde moment! Does anyone know the breakdown of Equestrian events to be seen on TV in central FL on WESH 2 NBC (which is channel 11 in the Ocala area)??? Various pages just aren’t loading for me and since TV seems to skirt this wonderful and most difficult sport (shame shame), I would like to catch any coverage they show, regardless of time of day or night!
Thanks in advance for any help and thank you for your site and dedication to what has been my own life long sport!
August 3rd, 2008 at 11:23 pm
I’ve seen that schedule before, and all I see on my official TV schedule is 9-2 on those long days. Either way, what I personally would like to know is if there is any way to figure out when exactly the equestrian events will be showing. My hubby wants to record it but can’t record everything. So are there segments when the horses will be shown and not? I am most interested in the Dressage and cross country but I like them all.
August 4th, 2008 at 9:38 pm
This is great but I still can’t work out anything for Australia. We seem to have no coverage. What are the online ones? Where can I find them? All we’re showing is swimming. Thanks
August 5th, 2008 at 12:38 pm
I’ve posted a schedule for the live online video streaming. This is US Eastern Standard Time: http://www.regardinghorses.com/2008/08/05/watch-2008-olympic-equestrian-events-online-schedule/.
Go here to input your own location and get a specific schedule for your time zone: http://www.nbcolympics.com/tv_and_online_listings/zone=ET/day=0/sport=EQ/online.html

Thank you so much for this posting! I have been searching for the Equestrian events, to no avail. Luckily, after reading this, I found all the equstrian events and have them all TiVod!!! Thank you so very much!!!
August 5th, 2008 at 10:55 pm
Thank you so much for posting this!!!! I have directTV and do not live in OH, but I would think it would be same if I convert to my time zone, but thank you so much!!
August 7th, 2008 at 8:48 am
I”m unclear on how to view the online streaming. Jackie has beautifully laid out how to get the scheduling, but what about the actual viewing. Could someone tell me the exact process?
Go to what?
Click on what?
August 7th, 2008 at 9:48 am
ddd - Here’s the link to watch the online coverage http://www.nbcolympics.com/video/index.html. There’s a list of all that are currently playing, and you just have to click the one you want. It will open up in another window. You do need to have Microsoft Silverlight installed to watch the video.

THANK YOU O2 channel!!!!! Wish you would air more equestrian events.
August 8th, 2008 at 11:26 am
Grr! I don’t get the Oxygen channel anymore with Comcast… pfft! And they seem to be showing the exact events I want to see (jumping). I’m going to have to go somewhere and figure out how to view events online. Glad Aussie got their scheduling! And good luck to all countries competing in Equestrian events!
August 8th, 2008 at 11:46 am
Jill,
It looks like all of the equestrian events are being covered online as well. You can watch it at http://www.nbcolympics.com/video/index.html. To see the schedule, go to http://www.nbcolympics.com/tv_and_online_listings/online.html.
August 8th, 2008 at 12:24 pm
This is a great site - unfortunately we don’t seem to be getting the same coverage in Canada. Has anyone found any coverage apart from Bold tv which seems to be interactive and unavailable to me?
August 8th, 2008 at 5:53 pm
This is a great service! Thanks for posting the info.
Go Beezie, our hometown (Cazenovia, NY) hero!
August 8th, 2008 at 8:21 pm
You must be in US to view the NBC online video, so no good from Australia, it knows it is coming from an Australian server so it wont let the feed through. Bummer.
August 9th, 2008 at 9:43 am
I am from Australia too and found I cant access the NBC site and the Australian coverage doesn’t include live footage of the equestrian events (despite the results) Can someone put the footage from NBC on Youtube for those of us who are only getting radio and press coverage but can’t watch the live footage… please!
August 9th, 2008 at 11:39 am

The best page I’ve found for searching detailed listings of equestrian events.
August 9th, 2008 at 1:25 pm
HELP! I do not get oxygen with my cable provider. I am in Canton, OH. All I want is a complete list of the equestrian events and time. Grr, it shouldn’t be this hard! Please help.
August 9th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
Laura, unfortunately this is the entire TV schedule for our area (I’m also in Canton). Most of the events are playing on Oxygen, and only a few days are elsewhere. However, all of the events are being streamed live online, which is good coverage if you’ve got a decent internet connection. You can view the complete schedule here: http://www.regardinghorses.com/2008/08/05/watch-2008-olympic-equestrian-events-online-schedule/. NBC is also posting the videos after they have been streamed here: http://www.nbcolympics.com/video/longformrewinds/index.html. So you can go back and watch the competition that has happened already.
Does that help? Let me know if that doesn’t answer your question.
August 9th, 2008 at 2:31 pm
Help, I’m in the UK and having similar problems trying to see any live feeds. BBC coverage isn’t up to it and being over here, NBC isn’t any good either. Can anyone let me know of any other online streams that I can see here?
August 9th, 2008 at 2:49 pm
Thanks Jackie! Must use moms computer that is direct connect (I’m a dino with dial up) and is Windows. USA had some great dressage on today. Aussie’s- congrats to impressive riding!
BEEZIE rules! Shes s great person and trainer! Love her to death and hope she does well too! C’mon Beezie Doodle! I laughed when commentators said ‘the US is lurking right now.’ Yea, we are… but well come out kicking!
August 9th, 2008 at 2:49 pm
SORRY, DOUBLE POST- wouldn’t let me say everything for some reason:
Did anyone else see that heat?! Even at night or early day there, the poor riders/horses upon entering the ring need buckets to catch that sweat! Shocker for them both to have AC stables, facilities and training rings and then BAM! Out into the Hong Kong heat. Since they had to build the dressage arena, wish they’d had built an indoor one as it’s going to be a super hot go for XCounty… an hour drive away.
Thanks again for this site & everyone thats provided such wonderful information. I’m biased as a competitor myself but I think equestrian events should get more recognition considering it’s the only sport where men and women compete equally, and age never matters.
Good luck to all countries… but yeah… GO USA!
August 9th, 2008 at 5:24 pm
I broke down and paid comcast ten bucks for the digital package that would give me oxygen with my limited cable service. They have a deal for the first 6 months its only 10 a month, and since I only need till the end of the olympics I thought it was a pretty good price
You do have to go to a comcast location and pick up a box and hook it up to your tv, but it was easy.
I am looking at the rewind of the first day and I am conflicted, on one hand at first I was happy it was just the footage, no voice over commentary, but after a while I was astounded to find I actually kind of wanted some of the back ground info…
Thanks to all here with schedules and info, I have it bookmarked!
August 9th, 2008 at 8:51 pm
Thank you thank you for this site & the coverage of the equestrian events. People, lets talk it up … pass the word.
August 9th, 2008 at 10:51 pm
I am sending this to as many people I can think of that will appreciate the ‘love’. I googled ‘olympic eqestrian events on tv’ and popped up with this site…it is now in my favorites list. I even just checked to make sure that I get all the channels needed to watch all the events…Sigh of releif, cause I do!
Thanks so much.
August 10th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
can’t seem to find any web coverage that works in Canada - the nbc site looked amazing but it won’t work here!!!
Does anyone know a website that might have it here? or anyone that’s copying the videos from nbc & posting them somewhere else?
August 11th, 2008 at 11:19 am
I’m getting so tired of equestrian events being pushed to the background at the olympics! I think more people would be interested in seeing the horses x-country than someone playing volleyball. It happens every summer olympics. Somehow we’ve got to get it across to NBC (or whichever network gets the olympics in any given year) that ribbon dancing, volleyball, etc. aren’t really OLYMPIC (in the true sense of the word) sports but eventing is. Oh well…….just venting here because we only get NBC and won’t be seeing any eventing or dressage or jumping.
August 11th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
AMEN and well said Penny!!! (Sarcasm mode)… cause after all, it’s SO hard to control and work with a force such as a ribbon (they our weigh us so). And of course, people are in mortal danger and get killed often enough during ribbon dancing. And oh, how those poor ribbons must be put down when they tear a ‘wrinkle’ or break in half. (Sarcasm off). Not just picking on ribbon dancing alone but any sport like that which is kind of fluffy and, imo, doesn’t merit Olympic status. I’m also tired of Equestrians getting the shaft of coverage. I grew up riding and competing, hearing other sports friends saying how “easy riding is and how it’s for wussies.” Right. When a soccer ball hits you in the head, easy peaszy. When a horse kicks you in the head… uh… ouch. Gotta watch out for those 1500+ lbs of BALL that everyone ‘plays’ with!
There- thats my vent for ignoring my sport for like, EVER!
August 12th, 2008 at 7:36 am
I am sooo disappointed.
No one has been able to find or suggest any live streaming for Equestrian events OUTSIDE of the USA.
As others have said above, here in Australia there is hardly any coverage despite Olympics showing on 2 different channels!
Has anyone found any live streaming of any kind available internationally??
I am so OVER beach volleyball, swimming, rafting, boating and ball games! Hours and hours of so many other things like that and even when there is amazing equestrian eventing going on we get only a few minutes squashed in between other things.. and mostly only if a rider or horse is falling or an Aussie happens to be on for a quick view between the trees! While entire soccer matches were broadcast that didn’t even have Australia playing in them!
Sigh.. is there any hope for view before its all over???
August 12th, 2008 at 4:30 pm
Kris- I feel your pain & disappointment. Even though I’m in the USA, I don’t have the particular channel showing the ‘most’ jumping coverage (I use ‘most’ loosely since our sport always gets the shaft). Saw some dressage on other channels & Australia dominated (yay for you)!
A rider fell? If so, who, if you remember? Or were you using that as an example? Even with the right viewing software online, I can’t get the video online at all because I’m on dial up. I have to get to a direct connect computer- but thanks to these links above and those that provided them, I should be able to view some jumping (thanks again)!
Like you, I’m tired of watching volleyball, soccer, field hockey, handball- and even swimming now (though I do enjoy it more than the others). The ONLY sport I’m not minding is gymnastics. Side bar- that sport is frustrating me these games because I think the judging is severely slanted AND I don’t believe that ALL the girls on the Chinese team are of proper age (which is in the news but I thought that as soon as I saw them; I grew up in an international boarding school w/ many people from around the world including all of Asia. I know what a 16 year old Chinese gal looks like. I have a # of Chinese friends that agree with me on this point as well).
I’m too off topic. I’m sorry you’re having trouble with finding any viewing. Is there ANY way you can contact your stations that ARE carrying any equestrian coverage that might lead you to some help? I’d have hoped Australia would have jumped on the chance to show more of the horses since they KICKED IT so AWESomely in dressage
Oh, and maybe, just maybe a friend in the US or else where can somehow copy some online feed footage and send it to you? If I knew how to do that, I’d do it for you in a heart beat. Are you saying the links above to NBC footage will not work for you at all? I’d have thought, being the world wed and all, that anyone could view it… hmmm. Curious.
Continued luck & safety everyone! Giddy up and go, go , GO Beezie, McClain and Laura!
August 12th, 2008 at 4:48 pm
Jill,
Amy Tryon fell off of Poggio early in the cross-country course, and 2-3 other riders also came off. I think the guy from China was one of them. Most were just from getting bad spots and the horses tripped over the fences. A lot of them were falls where the horses went down too; I absolutely hate seeing those. Fortunately they all walked away in one piece.
August 13th, 2008 at 10:52 am
HI
Iam in Thailand can you help ? what’s the site where i can see the olympics dressage online ?
August 14th, 2008 at 12:54 am
Hi,
Can anybody help with this? I cannot get any coverage on the dressage events, I live in Bahrain and I ve tried online NBC ect.. and I am not able to get on. My couch is riding in the dressage today, and i am so frustrated that I am not able to see him!!
Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!!
August 18th, 2008 at 6:19 pm
I don’t know who that woman is announcing, but for the love of GOD please put the mic down and walk away. Your voice is like nails on a chalk board only worse and you are to dam close to the mic. Some announcers should stick to print, you are one of them.
August 19th, 2008 at 6:21 am
I finally found some videos of equestrian events only to find that unless I had OS X 4.0 or higher, I was out of luck. 10.3.9 so I guess I’m out after all that. Doesn’t seem right.
August 22nd, 2008 at 11:56 am
I agree that more coverage is needed for the equestrian events! People like to see these challenging events and I don’t understand why NBC doesn’t cover more of it. THere used to be times to go to TV to watch certain events in a schedule but now it seems more cumbersome which is ludicrous considering all the venues there are to watch now compared to before. Anyway, I would hope that NBC or whoever does cover the next Olympics will take these comments into consideration and cover the equestrian events which are classic in the Olympics - not beach volleyball!
August 22nd, 2008 at 9:55 pm
Agree that we need a more complete coverage of all the equestrian venues. Perhaps they could use the Horse Network at the next Olympics or make another TV deal.. Regardless, this coverage was better than I have seen in the past.
August 23rd, 2008 at 12:34 pm
Coverage? NBC Coverage? What coverage? Unless you have cable there was NO COVERAGE OF THE EQUESTRIAN EVENTS!!!…even though we were assured NBC was covering them and they would be televised. The best coverage was the ‘84 Olympics in LA…since then the equestrian events have barely been shown. Had I known this, I would have upgraded my cable to get the channels showing them PARTIALLY…how many times do we have to watch Phelps winning the same race over and over…or the mugs of the newscasters in beijing going over and over the same tired material…or disect a dive 20 times…or the same races over and over and NOT ONE equestrian event…which is truly equal competition with men and women in one with their horses competing equally against each other…SAD…SAD…SAD…but you see the horses and riders will upstage their mugs without question…so can’t waste time showing something truly beautiful!!!
August 25th, 2008 at 5:44 pm
Gloria- Don’t feel too bad… no wait, go ahead! I actually called to upgrade my cable- I told them I didn’t care if I had to pay for the biggest package out there I wanted the Oxygen network so I could watch the ONLY sport I was interested in in the Olympics… no can do. Apparently it’s not requested enough and got dropped from their lineup. Period.
You can watch clips now at http://www.nbcolympics.com/equestrian/ But beware! Unless you have a super fast internet connection you are going to be frustrated! They have some highlights and then rough footage that’s 5 hours long and jumpy videography at best.
*sigh*
