Day 1 AM: Olympic Equestrian Competition – Eventing Dressage

Aug 08, 2008 9 Comments by

The first morning of Olympic equestrian eventing competition has officially wrapped up with the first third of the dressage tests for the event riders, leaving the first two US equestrian team riders to compete in good position.

Due to the extreme high heat and humidity in Hong Kong, the equestrian events are being held in the early morning and late evening when it’s at least a little cooler.

There were definitely some very pretty tests–and some not so pretty. Many horses were a bit skittish in the unfamiliar ring surrounded by skyscrapers and a loud crowd. Fortunately for the USA, Amy Tryon with Poggio II and Gina Miles with McKinlaigh were two of the best rides in the morning. While McKinlaigh had a few sticky lead changes, the rest of his performance was flawless, earning them a third place spot after the first half of the eventing dressage phase. Poggio II had a clean test, but his movement isn’t quite good enough to keep him in the top. He and Amy are currently in seventh.

Sitting in first is Lucinda Fredericks of Australia riding Headley Brittania. She is followed closely by her husband, Clayton Fredericks and his horse Ben Along Time. The top 15 line up is as follows:

1, AUS, Luncinda Fredericks (Headley Britannia)
2, AUS, Clayton Fredericks (Ben Along Time)
3, USA, Gina Miles (McKinlaigh)
4, SWE, Linda Algotsoon (Stand By Me)
5, FRA, Didier Dhennin (Ismene Du Temple)
6, GER, Frank Ostholt (Mr. Medicott)
7, USA, Amy Tryon (Poggio II)
8, POL, Pawel Spisak (Weriusz)
9, NZL, Mark Todd (Gandalf)
10, ITA, Stefan Brecciaroli (Cappa Hill)
11, GBR, William Fox-Pitt (Parkmore Ed)
12, ITA, Vittoria Panizzon (Rock Model)
13, GBR, Daisy Dick (Spring Along)
14, SWE, Katrin Norling (Pandora)
15, IRL, Austin O’Connor (Hobby Du Mee)
15, CZE, Jaroslav Hatla (Karla)

I was able to watch the entire first portion of the cross-country dressage phase live online this evening; I believe it will be replayed Saturday, August 9 on USA from 2:00 am-2:00 pm. Another set of eventing dressage competion will take place Saturday, August 9 in the evening (Hong Kong time) and will play live on NBC from 7:15am-10:40 am August 9 (US Eastern Time). The final third will be Sunday morning (Hong Kong Time) and will play live on NBC Saturday evening, 6:30pm-9:55pm.

    Debra,

The dressage that has been played so far is the dressage phase of eventing; Anky is the regular dressage discipline. That coverage begins tomorrow (Wednesday, August 13). Team dressage coverage is on 6-8pm Wednesday and Thursday on Oxygen, and individual is on Saturday, Aug 16 and Tuesday, Aug 19.
