Help! My Horse Needs a Great Show Name.

Jan 05, 2009 13 Comments by

A few weeks ago I posted on my personal Ace blog that I needed to come up with a show name for my boy. His registered name is Ace Brown, which just isn’t going to cut it for getting attention in the show ring. I like something a little more creative and meaningful. And I know there are a lot of you reading my blog who might just have some ingenius ideas for me.  So, would you be willing to help me out?

I realized that I do need to nail down a fun show name for Ace sometime soon so that I can go ahead and get my USEF and USHJA memberships. I was being silly and googled his name. This is what a site about baby names said “Ace” means:

The boy’s name Ace a-ce is pronounced ayce. It is of English origin, and its meaning is “number one, the best”. A nickname given to one who excels. Also an English surname meaning “noble”. Connotations of superiority come from the fact that ace is the playing card with highest face value. This may derive from the Latin “as”, the name of a coin of low value. The term “flying ace” goes back to World War I when planes were both novel and hazardous.

I like it! When I got him, I figured Ace was an OK name (compared to some of the terrible ones out there), so I’d stick with it. Ace Brown, on the other hand, I’ll have to live with as his registered name but not his show name!

Here are some of my favorite suggestions from the last time I brought this up:

From OnTheBit

  • Aces Wild
  • Ace Of Hearts
  • Winning Ace

From Abner’s Mom

  • Chocolate Ace

I also kinda like the classy, one-word names like Authentic or Solitare. I’d love to find something like that with Ace in it. And I want it to fit his personality.

Not asking much, am I?

If you haven’t seen it already, check out the article Stacey at Behind The Bit wrote on guidelines for choosing a show name. I like them, and am trying to abide by them in my own endeavor.

Ace is a very smart, very social horse. He learns quickly but sometimes likes to challenge me. He is incredibly sensitive and very aware of the tiniest adjustment I make in my aids, position, or body language. He is respectful of me and the other horses in his herd, but he also demands their respect. He has a one track mind if he discovers treat in my pocket. He won’t pay any attention to what I’m asking if he knows it’s there. He poops in his water bucket if he’s cooped up in a stall for long. He knows what he wants and he’s pretty good at getting his point across.

His parents’ names are Decorata and Chisos.

So, what classy, catchy name can I give him?

GreyHorseMatters – Hey, isn’t one of your kids named Jacquie? I kinda think that’s a nice name. :)

A few additional ideas I got from Twitter friends include

    Aced
    Aces
    Graceful
    CyberspAce

I see that his sire and dam have names with great potential for announcers to mangle. s riff:

    Innerspace
    Ace of Swords
    Flying Ace
    Hidden Ace
    Outer Space
    Bay Ace
    Brown Ace
    Decor Ace
    Sturdy Brace
    Charming Ace
    Loyal Ace
    Gambler’s Ace (sounds more western)
Ace Inhibitor (uh oh – that could be iffy)
    Or …
Something that uses ACE as initials, like …
    Advanced Corporate Endeavor (ugh)
Apples Cook Evenly (oh no – but you get the idea.)
    A Charming Equine
    (I’m fixated on “charming.)

    Fun game!

I like your idea of a one-word name with Ace in it, so I plugged Ace into a rhyming dictionary:

    Embrace
    Backspace
    Aerospace
    Boldface
    Interface

Or if you just want “ace” somewhere in the word, try going to http://www.onelook.com and entering *ace* (with the asterisks) in the search box. You’ll get a zillion words, mostly medical, but maybe there’s something good in there.

    Good luck!

    — ORIGIN Latin as ‘unity, a unit’. This is actually what the latin as means…the coin thing applies to coins of all values.

Any horse/rider team needs to be unified, be one…Maybe you could fit this in somehow?

I am awful at names so I am going to stick with the easy one words that have nothing to do with his name :)

    Audacious
    Confident
    Kinetic
    Oddity
    Genuine
    Deuce
    Avant Garde
    Trenchant

Yeah, im not so good at naming either. But I think it should have something to do with his smarts…though i zero ideas of how to do that. :p

    How about:
Ace King or King of Aces
OOH! I love this one: Poker Face!! Yep, that’s a winner. :)
ugh now that I have thought of such an amazing name, all others pale by comparison. ;) I am having serious mental block…but let’s see what other masterpieces i can come up with…

    Hmmm…Outrace?
    Apex?

Yep mental block….and just so you know, im not an egomaniac…usually. Just kidding! But i seriously LOVE the name Poker Face.
