Rolex Kentucky Day 3 Cross Country Results

rolex-kentucky-2009-courseBettina Hoy, Lucinda Fredericks, and Bruce Davidson Jr. managed to maintain spots in the top three after today’s cross-country phase of the Rolex Kentucky 3 Day Event. The beautiful weather, immaculate course, and impressive riding was however tempered by the tragic death of Mike Winter’s horse Kingpin after falling at the 10th fence, the Trakehner. The statement from Rolex is

“It is with great sadness that we announce that Kingpin, ridden by Mike Winter and owned by the rider and Kingpin Syndicate, died while competing at the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event on April 25, 2009. Kingpin, a 13-year old Irish Sport Horse, fell while negotiating Fence 10 and died at the scene.

The rider was evaluated by medical personnel on site and sent to Georgetown Community Hospital for further evaluation.

Veterinary and medical personnel were in attendance at the time of the fall. The cause of the horse’s death will be announced when determined after a necropsy.”

According to the US Eventing Association website:

“It appears that it was unassociated with the fence itself,” said the event veterinary delegate Dr. Catherine Kohn during Saturday evening’s press conference. “It’s possible that it may be determined as a rupture of a large blood vessel, which isn’t unheard of in human and equine athletes.”

Improving the safety of riders and horses in eventing has been a hot topic of conversation among the USEF, USEA, eventers, and horse enthusiasts over the last year. Apparently enough hasn’t been done yet to protect these great animals and their riders. I can only hope that these organizations continue to examine the sport and find tangible, effective ways to make it safer.
